The 'Willits Daily Photo' blog based in Willits, California in coastal Mendocino County, chose the local Mariposa Market pictured above as its favorite retail store for today's blogger theme, "My corner local shop," in which 174 bloggers from throughout the world are posting pictures of their favorite local stores.
Here's what the 'Willits Daily Photo' has to say about its favorite local store:
"Mariposa Market is the best place in town to find organic groceries, nutrition supplements, grooming products, tea sets, and even organic cotton socks. On weekdays, it closes by the time I get home from work, but I do use it on some weekends to get bread and yogurt and dried seaweed. There's no way to miss the giant sunflower mural there on this curve of Main Street."
Today Sunday, June 1, 174 photography bloggers are collectively participating in what's being called a "theme day." Today's theme is: "My corner local shop."
All 174 bloggers have posted pictures of their favorite retail store (or "The shop around the corner") on their photography-oriented blogs, along with a description of the store and why it is their favorite "shop around the corner."
Many of the retail stores pictured and described by the various bloggers as their favorite are supermarkets, specialty and natural foods stores, grocery stores and corner food markets.
For example, 'Paul's 365 Photo Blog'--Paul is a blogger based in San Francisco, California--has a picture of a Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. It's his mom's favorite neighborhood retail store, or shop around the corner, which he recently visited while attending his niece's wedding in the city. Paul says his favorite retail store is Trader Joe's in San Francisco though. Read Paul's post here about his--and his mom's--favorite neighborhood store.
The variety of food and other stores the 174 bloggers have chosen (and posed about) as their favorites is interest/grocerying and eclectic. They range from tiny mom antd pop grocery stores and huge supermarkets, to specialty foods stores, bookstores and other retail formats. The bloggers also are from throughout the globe, so you can get a truly international flavor in terms of food and grocery retailing and retailing in general.
You can view the favorite retail stores of all 174 bloggers here. There are thumbnail pictures of each favorite "local corner shop." You can click on the thumbnail photograph to take you to that blogger's individual blog, with his or hers picture and description about their favorite retail store and why it 's their choice.
For example, Tanya, who publishes the 'Monroe, Georgia Daily Photo' blog, has a photograph and brief description of her favorite store, a Piggly Wiggly supermarket located in her small town of Monroe in Georgia, USA.
On the other hand, a blog called the 'Delhi Photo Diary' based in New Delhi, India, chose a small grocery shop in the blogger's residential colony as her favorite retail store. The grocery shops like the one pictured in the blog are called "Kirane Ki Dukaan." Kirane means grocery and Dukaan means shop.
These grocery shops, which are located throughout rural India and run by families, are becoming endangered because of India's booming economy which is bringing mega retailers like Wal-Mart, France's Carrefour, Tesco and others to the country. India-based chains also are opening more and more hypermarts and huge supermarkets throughout the nation.
We've only given you three examples out of the 174 bloggers participating in today's favorite "My local corner shop" theme day. That means you can view the other 171 entries here.
The retail favorites offered by these 174 bloggers today offers a virtual treasure trove of global retailing across numerous formats--including food and grocery. Use it for fun, but also for knowledge and research. Reading the various entries allows you to be an armchair applied retailing anthropologist, increasing your knowledge of global retailing formats.
Enjoy!

Thank you for linking us! This was one of my favorite monthly theme. It is so much fun to see everybody's pick. It indeed does give a good idea of the place, whether supermarkets have replaced corner shops or not.
Thanks for the link! Each them day is special and this one was a fun theme to decide.
Greetings from Vienna, Austria, g_mirage
